Very Violent, Very Fun and Very Addictive!

User Rating: 8 | Loaded SAT
Loaded is a top down shoot 'em up released on the Sega Saturn in 1996. You play as one of six unique characters trying to break out of jail. To ultimately escape, you must go through, Prisons, sewers and lots of other environments gunning down various enemies along the way.

As previously stated, there are six characters to choose from. Each one looks totally different from the other and the all have different guns, armour and speeds. These help bring some balance and a little strategy to the game as each charaters has strengths and weaknesses. Like one character will have great firepower but will be slow at moving where as another will have the opposite.

Before each level you are given an objective. The early levels have simple objectives that just have you collecting key cards and heading for the exit. Later levels will have actual tasks like getting fuel cannisters to refuel your ship. The objectives are generally quite easy but give the game some variety.

While doing these objectives though, you are having to constantly fight off tonnes of enemies. These range from security guards and doctors to mutants, dogs and scorpions. Occasionally there will be a boss battle and on some levels there will be giant gun turrets to destroy.

Throughout the levels there will be coins to collect. They don't have a real impact on the game but will increase your overall score. Other pick ups include Ammo, Health, Extra lives as well as invincibility and invisibility power ups.

At the end of each level you are shown a results screen. This shows how many coins you collected, your accuracy and the body count.

The controls are simple and responsive and can be modified if you don't like the default setting.

Loaded also features a 2 player co-op which can be fun to play but I find the single player much better.

This game has pretty good graphics considering the time it was released. The characters, enemies and some objects are 2d sprites but are animated really well and fit in with the 3d environments. The levels themselves are definately a high point of the game. Each setting has a unique look that is made better by the various effects like lighting, explosions, and the gun flashes.

The sound is another high point of the game. The effects are all loud and clear with even when there's sound coming from a bunch of different things. The music is great overall but as the songs aren't that long and there's only one song for each level, they loop over and over which can get annoying. On the plus side though, the music really fits in with the action and the theme of the game.

Overall, Loaded is a very violent, very fun, and very addictive game. It's also available on the PS1 but the Saturn version is definately the best. If you have a Sega Saturn (or even if you don't), you must get this game.
