It was called “The Tetris for the PSP” and that quote gave me high expectations for this original title Lumines. It certainly intrigued me in its simple but highly addictive gameplay. It is indeed “The Tetris of the PSP” and if you like puzzle games like Tetris, I’ll assure you: you won’t be disappointed! The concept of Lumines is very original (aside from the fact that it contains falling blocks). The blocks only appear in one different shape, but they contain four smaller blocks in two different colors (which are different per skin). You have to make squares of the same color and they get deleted when the timeline, which moves from left to right, passes over them. What’s the goal? Survive as long as you can! The graphics look great (not awesome but great). The game looks very colorful and fresh. After every few levels the skin changes and the entire game looks totally different. It is however a bit confusion when the game fades from the one skin into another, cause the blocks look different too. Nevertheless the game looks very great and refreshing! The sound in the game is at the highest I’ve ever heard for a handheld game! The soundtrack is awesome and the SFX match the background perfectly. The minute you start playing the game with your earplugs in you start nodding your head on the opening tune. Especially one of the final skins, called “Lights”. Very good tune with matching SFX, all the ingredients for a great atmosphere! Lumines truly is “The Tetris for the PSP”! It’s highly addictive and so much fun. If you like puzzle games, then this is the one you want for your PSP!
