User Rating: 9.2 | Lunar 2: Eternal Blue PS
August 24, 2004 - For those of you who've played Lunar: Silver Star Story, Lunar2: Eternal Blue will be very familiar as far as gameplay mechanics, characters, and even at certain times the storyline as well. The graphics, like in their predecessor, are certainly not the top of the line, so if you can't enjoy a game unless it has really great graphics, then this game will disappoint you, as it's graphics are reminiscent of the 16-bit era of gaming. To those of you who can play a game for its enjoyment rather than just for graphics, Lunar2 like like the first Lunar, will certainly not disappoint. The musical score is very good, and there are more sequences in the game with voice acting talents than the first installment, which is a good thing, as they are well done. There are a number of nice anime cutscenes just like Lunar: Silver Star Story. Some familiar faces(and names)return in one form or another from the first game, and this helps relate the story to the original, though Lunar2 is for the most part a different story entirely. The main cast of characters has changed, though some appearances may seem very reminiscent of the cast from Lunar SSSC. The plot takes on a bit of an unexpected twist, and it throws you right into the thick of things to begin with, however you soon get swallowed up in the story, and you'll enjoy the ride as you discover the mysteries surrounding the strange girl from the equally strange Blue Star. The cast of characters are solid, almost on the level of the cast from Lunar1, especially as far as Hiro and Lucia are concerned. Ronfar provides the same comic relief that Kyle represented from the first Lunar, and on and on it goes. The battle system is like it was in the first game, a somewhat uniquely designed menu driven battle layout complete with voice acting for techniques. The creatures your party fights in battles are similar in difficulty and innovative ideas as Lunar SSS, so if you've played the first game, you've got a good idea what that means. If you haven't played Lunar 1, then you can expect battles that are almost never so easy that you're bored to death, and some are quite challenging indeed, requiring some thought into a battle strategy to beat, rather than just hitting a button over and over until you slaughter everything with ease like you may have seen in other titles. Overall, this game lives up to the standards that its predecessor established, and the story that it draws you into is exciting and full of riddles and mystery to uncover. Somehow though, it seems fall just ever so slightly below the previous installment as far as lasting enjoyment and the overall impression that the game leaves behind after completing it, but perhaps that's only my opinion, and in any case, it's still a very good RPG that should not be missed for any reason for fans of the first game, or for anyone in general looking for a solid PS1 RPG to play. There's plenty of hours of enjoyment and fun in Lunar2: Eternal Blue.
