Why did I spend $70 on this game?

User Rating: 8 | Madden NFL 10 PS3
I love the Madden franchise. I have owned every version since 99. This year I decided not to buy the game due to a crackdown on spending in an effort to save for school. I finally broke and bought Madden 10 (really did not fight that hard) and if I had not personally put the game disc into my PS3 myself I would have thought someone had slipped Madden 09 into my system as a joke to see if I would notice the switch. Truth be told, I would not have been able to tell the difference.

I have the same complaints of Madden 10 as I had originally for Madden 09. FIrst off I can not run the football. My best game so far was a 19 carries for 44 yards performance by Thomas Jones. Even with the solid O-line of the NYJ I still can not run (on pro difficulty). Last year I found maybe 3 running plays that worked and I expect I will eventually find the same for this version of Madden, I just hope it does not take 3 seasons to figure it out this time. On the upside Mark Sanchez looks like a shoe in for MVP with all these passing yards I am getting.

When I played Madden 08 I wrote a review on this site and said that that game was the death of the best part of the Madden games, "Be a Superstar" mode. And 2 updates later this version is still dead. Just awful. Madden 07 nailed this game mode and EA has butchered it ever since.

One new problem with this game is the un-skippable cut scenes. Not exactly a story driven action adventure here so WTF is this?

I know that so far I have been critical of Madden 10 but it is a good game. It would just be more appropriately labeled "Madden 09 2: The Search for More Money".

I like Madden 10 but only because it relies so heavily on a previous version of the series which I also liked.

As I said earlier I have owned every Madden over the past decade. I know that every new iteration can not bring with it an earth shattering new game mechanic that changes the way we play digitized football. But this year more than ever before I feel that I have spent $70 on a roster update. I do not even find the graphics to be an improvement over last year.

If I could go back to Future Shop and not buy this game, I would not. However I do wish that EA might introduce a new way to update rosters on last years Madden. I would gladly pay up to $15 for a single roster update that would allow me to import the base Madden 10 rosters to Madden 09. This would have saved me money that I was trying not to spend in the first place, and given me the exact same football experience.

Overall when deciding whether or not to purchase this game you have to decide. Are you like me? A gamer who can not play a game if it is not the newest in their collection. Or can you master the urge to own the new, and should be best version of everything. Merely content on enjoying the same great game over and over again (minus a few new rookies).
