I haven't played Madden since 03, so I decided to rent it. I am glad that I did. I didn't like the overall feel of the game, but the franchise options are pretty good. I still like ESPNs overall presentation, sound and gameplay to Madden, but if you are strictly looking for a Franchise game I would recommend Madden over ESPN. A few complaints that I have are for one the commentary. It just doesn't get it right, and seems very patchy at times. I also found it to easy to just toss up a long ball to my receivers every time. I do like the variety of the playbooks compared to ESPN though. Overall either way you go this year you will get a very good football game. Rent both and decide for yourself which one you like better.
