An extended tech demo

User Rating: 5 | Mafia II PC
From the start, I was really pulled in by this game. The beginning war mission was interesting and fun. I was truly amazed by the drive into Empire Bay and both the snowy effects on vehicles and scenery. From the walk to Mom's house and the fight to defend your sister I was almost blown away by how great the engine was. The cars are accurate to the era and are modeled beautifully. The prison also looked awesome. But at this time fights felt like a chore and the news about mom getting sick was way out of place. You see her for a few cutscenes and that's it. Once I got to summer the city looked even better. The story was interesting and captivating. But the same can't be said for the characters. I felt Vito and Joe had no souls because their personalities are monotone. The minor characters had so little influence on the story I don't think I would have cared if it was Joe playing all of them at once. Voice acting was top notch as well. But sound issues like no sound when crashing in a car and parts that aren't "soundy" enough put me off. But since I want to keep this short I'll move on to my main 2 gripes:
CUT CONTENT
and
LACK OF GAMEPLAY
CUT CONTENT:
There was so much content cut from this game I wonder if they made content just to remove it. A great example is level 3 upgrades to cars. It works on PS3 and its IN THE GAME and can be activated via LUA commands.
LACK OF GAMEPLAY:
Main story line. That's it. And it was short lived at that. The only thing you can do is the main storyline, there are no side missions and shooting up the cops and joyriding is just plain boring. Police are so brain dead and the inability to shoot whilst driving makes chases a snore fest. There is no free roam at all. There's a mod for it but I'm not reviewing that which should have been in the game. So all in all I rate it as follows:
Graphics: 9
Story: 5
Sound: 7
Gameplay: 3
Value: 2
Overall: 5(.2)
Don't even buy it, its not worth it.
