Never before have I been so immersed in a story.
What immediately drew me in was the setting. What could be cooler than going back to 1940s to play through a Mob thriller? I am not going to give to much away, just in case that someone who reads this still wants to give the game a try. You play as the taxi driver Tommy Angelo, who one night gets involuntarily involved with the Mafia, and must make a choice whether or not this is the life he wants.
Granted, the graphics are not AMAZING, but that should not take away from the overall experience. As a player, I grew to love the characters as the story progressed, and I was almost drawn to tears during the final scene. Great writing.
The driving mechanics take a while to get used to, but once you have them down, it's a piece of cake. There are other modes of transportation too, such as monorails and trams. Most guns and cars are readily available to you, and the game does not really have you unlocking new weapons.
One thing that I also found pretty awesome was the fact that you could be pulled over by the police in the game. This is not like GTA where the cops just shoot to kill if you dent their car. No, this is more realistic. If a cop sees you run a red light or speeding down the highway, you will likely get a ticket. If you run away from the police, a warrant goes out for your arrest. The cops only shoot back if you shoot your weapon, which is a nice change from GTA.
Its the little things that make this game good. For example, your car can run out of gas. At first this may sound like a pain in the as*, but it is actually very realistic. You would need to drive for a looooong time to deplete your tank. If it so happens that you keep using the same car, there are gas stations around the city that you can visit.
If you are thinking about getting Mafia 2 and have not played the first one, I STRONGLY recommend that you give it a try. It cannot be more than $5 in the bargain bin. This game is one of my all-time favorites and never have I been so immersed in a video game before.
Machs gut!
