Should have been tweaked more in the 2 years it took them to port it, but it grows on you!

User Rating: 8.5 | Mafia XBOX
If you like Driver, Grand Theft Auto and Al Capone, you're going to love Mafia. Mafia draws from games like Driver and Grand Theft Auto to create a 1930's free roam environment. Now, the graphics aren't top notch after being ported to the Xbox and the draw distance is lacking in a major way but you'll often let it slide in the story mode. The story mode takes you through missions much like other games of this genre and does really well, walking is a bit stiff but otherwise very functional. Driving on the other hand is a bit more of a task, it's not terrible but the cars tend to act like cars from the 1930's so it's not so much bad mechanics as it is good historical research.

There is also a Free Ride mode much like the Driver series, in this mode you'll drive around at your leisure finding things to do, people to shoot and cars to wreck, you can't carjack too many cars at first, you'll need to progress through the Story mode to "learn" how to get inside and start them up. But it's much more apparent in Free Ride that the draw distance is not up to par. Considering this game was out 2 years for PC before it was ported to consoles makes you wonder why it isn't so appealing. All in all you'll probably be able to get over the sloppy graphics, get used to the antique cars and enjoy Mafia just how it is.
