An extremely good game at the time that ended up as a forgotten classic.

Every once in a while a game comes along with an idea that’s seems so cool you think that it couldn’t possibly be done with current technology. Magic Carpet was one of those games. The premise is simple, because of greed human kind has sucked the world dry of mana and now you the player must restore that mana. You go about this by using your powerful magic to defeat monsters and enemy wizards who then drop their mana in the form of small silvery balls which must be collected by mana collecting hot air balloons. The game plays in a similar way to other Peter Molyneux titles, by giving you the choice of getting mana by killing monsters or by destroying houses and killing innocent people, either way is fine.

One of the things you notice in the game is that you can alter the shape of the world. Every time you upgrade your base more of the surrounding land will flatten down and during fights with monsters your spells will cause craters and set fire to trees. One of the things you will definitely notice in the game no matter what version you play is the appalling draw distance. It can be forgiven slightly as at the time this was a very ambitious and impressive game to look at with its changing landscapes and rolling waves not to mention swarms of flying monsters and giant bad tempered worms. The PC version does let you see a tiny bit further in front of you compared to the Playstation and Saturn versions but not much. The whole game takes place from a first person view and this can be disorientating at first as normally this kind of game might have been shown from an adjustable birds eye view. The sound isn’t that great to listen to as all it really consists of is some droning background music and a collection of various pain/death yelps you hear during battles with monsters.

Over all this was a great game when it came out and if you’re willing to forgive the draw distance it can give you hours of fun now.
