This game has a wealth of extra features and customization. It's too bad the core gameplay is utterly broken.

User Rating: 5 | Major League Baseball 2K8 PSP
When I saw MLB 2k8 for the PSP for $5, IN 2008, that should have clued me in to something. But I was looking for something to kill many many commuting hours, and I figured a baseball game would do the trick. And to be quite honest, it has. But that's only because I've learned to accept it's many shortcomings, and enjoy what is good in this game.

What's really sad about this game is that the devs did everything right, except what really needed to be done right. The gameplay, which is quite important in a sports game, is deeply flawed. When you're at bat, it's really hard to tell where the pitch will be located when it crosses the plate. I ended up tweaking the A.I. so that most pitches were likely to be in the strike zone, and I just swung at everything. When you're running the bases, your players are extremely sluggish, and trying to make your runner turn around and go back immediately is like trying to make a U-turn in a semi on a 2 lane road. And when you try making your runner on 1st base go to 2nd, instead of that forcing the guy on 2nd to move, he'll stand there, so you essentially have to click on each individual runner and point them to the base you want them to go to. Try doing that when you're trying to beat out a throw from the outfield.

But the worst is fielding. About 10% of the time a ball is hit to a fielder, you'll run to the ball but the player won't field the ball, it will just bounce at his feet. Sometimes you'll try to dive for a ball with the "X" button, but instead your player will run & pick up the ball and throw it to home plate, which is what the "X" button does (or is supposed to do) AFTER you pick up the ball. And sometimes instead of trying to throw a runner out at a base, the fielder will just toss the ball to the baseman like he's playing catch with his 6 year old son in the back yard, resulting in the runner being safe of course.

That's actually just a sample of the gameplay "shortcomings", to put it politely. Fortunately, there are things you can do to balance things out, such as adjusting the A.I. to make your players more skillful. Of course that doesn't fix the mistakes, but it will give you an upper hand to balance out the lower hand the game's mistakes give you. As an added note, the manual might as well have never been made, because it's useless. The pitching mechanic in the game is actually fairly complex, but you'd better figure it out on your own, because the manual doesn't even touch on it.

It's ashame the gameplay is so bad, because this game has a lot to offer otherwise. You can make your own characters and make their stats and looks however you want. You have lots of management options, such as trades, promoting players, sending players to the minors (you can even play minor league games), just about anything you could think to do as a manager. As you complete goals in the game, you earn credits which you can use to buy different uniforms, use alternate stadiums, etc... You can even buy a gameroom in your clubhouse that has games like darts, shuffleboard, and air hockey, all of which you can play.

If you're interested in the management aspect of the game, it's actually a pretty good game. But if you buy this expecting to actually play baseball, I hope you have a high tolerance for mistakes.
