Lord Zetta is one freaking overlord you wouldn't want to mess with!!

User Rating: 8.5 | Makai Kingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome PS2
Being a SRPG genred game, the game would always be presented in hand drawn 2D graphics with the exception of the isometric (3D-esque) enviroment which you can rotate in 180 degree angles. I absoultely loved the quality of each character design and the detail of it, is nothing short of amazing. The storyline is also well thought up and conveyed in such brilliant fashion. It revolves around a freaking Overlord of the universe, named Lord Zetta. In his blinding quest to be the strongest Overlord in the whole cosmos, he seek the Sacred Tome. Little did he realise, the Sacred Tome had been tampered with and during his quest to obtain it, he was confined into the Tome itself. Meaning his soul is trapped inside the Tome (It's just a book). Once he is trapped inside that book, he is powerless and enlisted the helps of humans, demons and any character class in the universe to aid him to restore his former self. During the process of being trapped inside the Tome, the Tome's own soul has been pushed out and evolved into a girl named Trenia. Lord Zetta also lost his control on the netherworld.

In the game, your suppose to fight in 7 netherworld to regain your former self (it's actually 60 levels of map to go through). But even after you finish the 7 netherworld, you will find out that you still can't return back into your own body. In came, Pram, the wannabe oracle who is also an Overlord. At first she was your ally, but later in the game, you will learnt that she was the one that rewrote the Tome. Nothing malicous actually, she just wanted to have fun. The game consist of 7 other Overlord, namely, Seedle (Lord of Underworld), Mickey (Dark Lord), Salome (Zetta's apprentice and Lover ?), Pram, Babylon (Ancient Dragon), Drake the third (Crappy King) and Alexander (Lord of Destruction, who is actually a boy). I won't spoil the game's ending so the story ends here.

Voice over in the game is brilliant. The game is rated Mature by ERSB due to the constant swearing by each Overlord. It's actually the plus point of the game. Expect cursing like **** and some other suggestive languages. The audio in the game is very well done. No noise or skipped sound throughout. The impact of each spells and weapon attack is very easy on the ear if you jacked your PS2 into a decent home theater sound system. The SRPG character system is pretty basic and it's easy to play with. You basically need an object to create character. The character classes ranges from human to demon and divided into many sub classes, such as soldier, medic, wizard and blah blah blah. What i like about this game also is that the level cap for a character is 9999. Yup, Level 9999. I finish the game when my characters are around level 70. I'm not sure how long you need to play to reach 9999. Another good reason to play this game is the array of weapons and spells. Weapon ranging from the traditional sword, rapier, staff, axe to the more unorthodox bazooka, gatling gun, shotgun and even a book.

The AI isn't really that intelligent. I noticed that the AI first plan is always trying to kill off my weakest character everytime. This is pretty sucky as the average SRPG gamer should have no problem dispatching the CPU controlled opponents. This game can be easily ended in 10 hours top. But i assure you it's a 10 hour well worth to be spend on.

Pros:

* Nice vintage 2D graphics
* Excellent Audio in voiceovers and boom effects.
* Nice easy battle system.
* Great storyline.
* Greatly animated spells and weapon attack.

Cons:

* A bit retarded AI.
* Kinda short la the game.
* cutscene cannot be skipped.
