Nothing revolutionary.

User Rating: 7 | Mario Kart 64 N64
The original Mario Kart for the Snes may have been one of the best arcade Kart Racing games ever made. Mario Kart 64 tried to cash in on that, but while didn't fail miserably, falls short of the podium. The game is the same as any Kart game, bunch of Mario characters race in wild Mario Universe levels dodging level perils and attacks from the other 7 racers. There isn't much to this one that the original Mario Kart didn't have, except the 3d. The levels are really nice, real raceway looking courses to Ice roads to a beach to a desert train station in which characters have to avoid being caught waiting for the train. The real problem is with the gameplay. The AI is not too bright, easily picked off by green shells or bananas if you are ahead of them. The game also seems to put whoever is in the 2nd position behind you automatically becomes your shadow, and will speed up and catch up to give you a race. Example: Wario Raceway using a lighting strike caused many of my competitors not to get over the big jump and fall way back. The 6th place driver way behind moved up to second, and within a lap was hanging around my bumper, and passed me for the win. The big draw was the 4 player racing, and the battlemode. At 10 bucks Virtual Console it might be worth it, but it's also probably a good idea to save the money for the better and inevitable Super Mario Kart to hit VC.
