Everyone bought the original Max Payne after seeing the in game movie of Max wiping out a room full of henchmen in the slow "bullet time" effect that was used so well in "The Matrix". Unfortunately they found little else then a competent shooter but not anything they hadn't seen before. And while a good game, it never reached the status it may have if it hadn't been for the gameplay gimmick that over-rode the whole thing. And now we come to Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. Essentially an extension of the original, Max Payne follows on from that story and continues the trials and tribulations of Max Payne, the down on his luck cop who had his wife and child killed early on in the original. This time, Max is framed and must prove his innocence while gunning for the people who wronged him. And gunning after them you will. An endless array of bad guys are at your disposal and awaiting your lead. This game doesn't hold back on its action, nor on its "adult" content. The game is rated for Adults, and rightly so. The violence and depiction of decay in a city gone bad is over the top and really draws you in. This is a seedy game, with seedy characters, playing against a seedy backdrop. Although mature, anyone who has played a shooter before will feel right at home here. And if you played the original, than you may be mistaken for looking at the same game, as Max Payne 2 is very similar to the original. This is not an altogether bad thing, but more thought into the characters as well as the locations would have been ideal. The amount of weaponry you get is amazing, and throughout the game you will get your hands on a number of weapons like Rifles, Handguns, Shotguns and Semi-Automatics. Graphics are up to par with the shooting genre. You will never feel amazed in this game, but they are competent and there is no slowdown, except when you are the one who is slowing down the time. This has been expanded somewhat with the inclusion of bonus points and moves for killing bad guys while in "Bullet time". Sound is for the most part good, with the voices standing out. Music is mostly ok, but occasionaly grates. While it doesn't do anything really wrong, it never tries to excel and you will feel as though this was an inclusion the Developers didnt think of until the end. Overall, the atmosphere, as well as its "Bullet time" gimmick is what really sets apart Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. Playing very much like a comic come to life, Max Payne deals with a very adult subject matter while providing a competent shooter that never really tries anything new. Although a short game, this is a well made game that will delight you in its gameplay, but little else.
