I had always wanted to play the original Mech Assault but never got around to it. So, when Mech 2 came out, I jumped on it the day it launched. I am a big fan of Mech based games, such as Mech Warrior, Steel Battalion, Gun Griffon, ect. And the prospect of an online Mech game had me thrilled. Now that I've had the game for many weeks, I've finally formed an opinion on it. First, the single player: The campaign was a little longer than I expected, and provided a good challenge for me. It took about 15 hours to beat. The missions were pretty good, and mixed things up a bit, such as different objectives like Search and Destroy, Escort, Stealth, Sabotauge, ect. Some moments are written into the levels well, for instance while trying to sneak into a city and rescue prisoners, your ambushed by 4 Mechs, a tough suprise battle that's complimented with a pumping metal music track that begins on que. After you beat the Campaign though, there is no real reason to come back. Where the game really shines (And sometimes fails to shine) is it's online portions. The online is great for the most part.. lots of gametypes, much veriety, the Conquest mode. There are many roles to play in the different types of Battle such as defense, support, supply man, ect. and that makes using teamwork key. I've read many BattleTech and MechWarrior books, and often times full-on battles in online game have so much strategy and dynamic elements that you'd feel like your playing on of the books. I don't know how they did it, but it actually feel so fluid that you'd think it was all scripted events going on. Now, with all that said, there are some problems. The biggest one is that it's not a very popular Live game, and it can sometimes be hard to find a game. I sometimes wait for 15-20 minuets to start playing. Also, the Conquest Mode has several glitches and flaws that prevent games from starting. For instance, the max number of players is 12, so that'dbe 6vs6, however, the conquest servers don't cap team size, so if you get 8 people on one team who won't leave, your game can't start. All those flaws do is slow down the game finding process though, so if you don't mind waiting a few minuets from time to time, I recommend giving this game the shot it deserves.
