Decent core gameplay but far from what it was promised to be.
So why the low score of 6.0?
It's for all that the game promised and failed to deliver in the almost a year and a half of beta. The developers made grandiose claims that coaxed players into paying large sums of money (everything in this game is ridiculously overpriced) in order to support and speed up the development of the game. And what did they get after almost a year and a half of beta? Almost nothing. There has been almost no new content since open beta aside from a few modules, mechs, balance changes and one new game mode. The game at its core is still the same bland shooter it was 1.5 years ago, just with a few sprinkles on top.
The devs have promised community warfare, different game modes, clan invasions, better pilot skill trees and lots of goodies, nothing of which have been implemented so far and shows no signs of being implemented, despite an enormous infusion of cash from the players.
The worst part, and this is what ultimately led me to lose hope in the game and refuse to give PGI any more money, is that the devs have blatantly ignored the player's pleas to fix very simple issues in the game. For example the mechlab sucked when beta came out and guess what? It hasn't changed at all, it's still the same. More over the fact that there is no chat lobby and no ingame voice chat in a game that relies very heavily on teamwork is simply unacceptable.
The fact that PGI still hasn't fixed these simple but important issues leads me to believe that there aren't gonna be any more major gameplay changes. If it takes them more than a year and a half to implement a game lobby where players can find team members and discuss their strategy than what makes anyone think that they will implement complicated features such as community warfare anytime soon?
But hey I might be wrong, maybe the game will eventually flourish into what it was promised to be. But at this point I really don't see where all the money from the founder's package and hero mechs has gone. If I knew back then what I know now I would not have given the devs a single cent.
With all that said, the game is still decent, plain but decent, sort of like a good half life mod. And it's FTP so go ahead try it out, especially if you like mechs. Just don't expect any more out of it than you have now.
