The first in the series; must have game for the Playstation.
Most things about it are the same as your everyday, typical shooter, but a couple things set it apart, especially for it's age. One thing is the lack of a crosshair. A crosshair appears when you aim, but it doesn't detract from the gameplay, because it's pretty easy to hit your enemy otherwise.
Also, this game affects the enemy depending on where you shoot them. If you shoot them in the head (assuming they're not wearing a helmet, in which case it will fall off), they die in one shot. The foot, they hop around for a while. The groin, they fall over in pain. There are other places you can shoot them, and at the end of each level it calculates how many shots you got on each body part (as well as how many enemies you've killed, accuracy, etc.). Occasionally, the enemy goes down with their guns firing all over the place before they hit the ground.
The AI and animations are pretty interesting sometimes. I had an incident where I threw a grenade at an attack dog, and it returned the grenade to it's owner, killing both. The enemy almost always throws your grenades back at you, unless you hit them directly. The enemy tends to shoot around corners a lot, and they're usually found in groups of 2 or 3. The animations are very good, except for when the enemy clips through walls, falls backwards when you shoot them in the back, and all that stuff that goes with the technical limitations of that time.
There are some moments that are just a lot of fun in this game. I was walking around in one level, and I ran into 3 Germans admiring a snowman they made, right before I gunned them down. It's also a lot of fun blowing up exploding crates/barrels around large groups of people. The machine gun nests are a lot of fun too.
After you've completed the game, there is plenty of replay value. At the end of each level you are awarded either 1, 2, or 3 stars depending on how you did during the level. If you get 3 stars on every level for that mission (which is usually about 3-4 levels), you unlock a medal and a cheat code. I have only unlocked one of these, so I have to go back and start getting some more.
The multiplayer is nothing special. Just your typical 2 player deathmatch, customary of the time. I do remember a cheat code allowing you to play as a velociraptor or a bulldog, though.
Overall, it's just a fun game. It's one of the few first person shooters on the Playstation, and it pretty much started the whole World War 2 craze. If you're a fan of shooters and don't mind bad graphics, give this one a go.
