WW 2 console shooter that is better than most!

User Rating: 9 | Medal of Honor Underground PS
Medal of Honor Underground is actually a very fine game. Really an excellent shooter that surprised me with little touches that bring the game to life.

Sound: excellent, really a high point of the game. Weapons have sounds that make them feel like a real gun. The little pistol pops and the big guns rumble. Tanks clank and chatter. Also the enemy speak their native tongue as they hunt you down. Sometimes you can't see them but you can hear them chattering away in German somewhere near by as they look for you.

Graphics and level design: Another high point. Of course they are dated but they are detailed environments and the colors are rich and bright. It comes across kind of like an impressionist painting and the more I play it the more I like how the game looks. I am playing on a HD CRT and that makes a difference. I don't think it would look as nice on a big flat panel.

Gameplay: A real blast. The AI has these great death animations. Sometimes they twist with their dead trigger finger on their weapon spraying bullets as they fall. Head shots cause their steel pots to fly off. When wounded they will try and crawl away and when you finish them off they lay prone. Also they run for cover and shoot while peeking around corners. For an old game it is pretty impressive. Also there is some humor in the game, I mean funny stuff!

The environments are semi interactive. Vehicles explode in flames, dynamite blasts will bring down structure in a pile of smoke and rubble. There are these home made petrol bombs early in the game you can throw that go off in a ball of flame.

There are missions to accomplish in every level that makes for an interesting play through, rather than just a strict run and gun.

Controls: Excellent, one of the best controlling console shooters I have played. It is not hard to get a bead on someone and movement is smooth and responsive. You can crouch and sneak, jump, step side to side, and look around with ease. It is all very intuitive, I got the hang of it real quick.

Saving: Not so good. There are no mid level saves in the game so when you die it's back to the start of the level. This makes it necessary to memorize your way through if you are having trouble, but it hasn't been too difficult.

All in all I can recommend MOH Underground if you are looking for a very good action game to play on the PS2. The guys who worked on this title deserve some credit!
