If you thought Mega Man 1 was hard, think again!
After the hassle, to say the least, of buying a broadband adapter for my Wii, finally getting it to work and downloading the game, I was ready to play. The first thing that strikes you when you start playing is how very hard this game is. This sort of runs through the entire game. I'm confounded by the choice of making the game so hard, since the main point of this game is the nostalgia. I assume the developers of MM9 wanted to give the hardcore fans something really challenging, but still most people would probably be fine with half the difficulty of this game.
Inti Creates have done away with the powering-up of the Mega Buster, as well as the slide. I think this is a good choice since those things made the games less challenging (they shouldn't have messed with the original setup of the first game). However, the energy tanks are still here, which I think are worse than the slide and the powering-up in making the game less challenging in a boring way. Picking up E-tanks are fine, buying them not so much. The whole store is in my humble opinion not a very good addition even though I'm perfectly aware it has been around in previous games. Buying E-tanks to finish the bosses is boring since you don't have to care about which order you should finish them in. Also the difficulty of the game becomes geared after what items you can buy which makes the game either A: Too hard (if you don't have the proper items), or B: Too easy (if you've bought the right items).
The boss fights are great, so is the music. I like the idea of the challenges, but the virtually impossible one (finish the game without taking damage) is just silly. I like the idea of an 8-bit game created today, but at the same time how great would it not be to get a sidescrolling platformer Mega Man game with next-gen graphics and technology?
