A great look at some old school gems.
When you boot up the game, you find yourself in a group of hallways, so change some settings. Go to New Game. Pick one of 8 games, and get ready to blast stuff. Lots.
You may notice yourself jumping at enemies in an attempt to kill them, or wildly shooting as you plummet to your death, don't worry, it's not that you're bad, it's because someone thought it was a good idea to make B jump and A shoot, this is a minor problem, and you'll soon be used to it.
To the games! In this category, Mega Man 2 is undeniably, the greatest game here, awesome weapons, great bosses and quite possibly the best soundtrack of the 8-bit era. If you have not experienced it's majesty, I pity you. And your children....right, the other games. To be fair, none of the games are bad per se, you can however, feel some lacking effort in some of them. Take Mega Man 5 for example, I can't even recall that much being added. Not to mention the bosses were stupid (Quiver in fear at the might of...CHARGE MAN!) and the music was lame, you will however find the tight controls still present. Below, I listed the games in order from Best to Worst, and why. Keep in mind that each game plays similar to the next.
Mega Man 2.
The Good: Fantastic music, bosses, level design and weapons.
The Bad: It's not as hard as MM1, so you game masochists may weep.
Mega Man.
The Good: It's the game that started it all. It has Cut Man, pretty good levels, music and bosses. This game will beat you down, and make you like it!
The Bad: Even if you enjoy a challenge. That Yellow Devil guy is a bastard! Worse, no Pause Trick (Or I have'nt found it yet >_>)
Mega Man 6.
The Good: A return to elemental themed bosses. it's a good balance of ease and challenge. Rush Adaptor is awesome!
The Bad: It's a 1993 NES game. The gameplay was pretty stale by now.
Mega Man 7.
The Good: Finally, FINALLY! Mega Man jumps into 16-bits. The music picks up well. Bosses are'nt all that bad.
The Bad: Nothing really new beyond improving the graphics.
Mega Man 4.
The Good: The Charge Shot adds a layer of "oomph!". Adorable, power up giving sidekick. The music and bosses are better when compared to Mega Man 3. Awesome 3D~esque power up cutscenes. Two castles to go through.
The Bad: Even if it picks up some of the Mega Man 3 slack, it feels like a rehash.
Mega Man 3.
The Good: Slide is awesome. Rush is pretty neat. You can fight all 8 Robot Masters from Mega Man 2.
The Bad: The level design is pretty cruel. Some of the bosses are lame *cough Top Man *cough*
Mega Man 8.
The Good: Colorful environments. Neat weapons. You can customize Mega Man. The voice acting.
The Bad: The voice acting. Far to "candy coated". Slide scenes are hell. Bosses are pretty stupid. Long, drawn out levels.
Mega Man 5.
The Good: The environments are nice and can lead to some nifty puzzles.
The Bad: Lame bosses, lame power ups, lame everything.
There's also 2 other unlockable Arcade Games, in which you choose 1 of 3 (4 in the 2nd) characters and fight robots similarily like in a fighting game. In conclusion, if you're a fan of challenge, 2D platformers and some good fun. You'll dig MMAC and it's pirate's chest of unlockables.
Thank you for reading my really long review!
