The Good: I have to agree that the PSP didn't have a great launch year. Many of the games that came out were run of the mill of straight ports (which is not always a bad thing) which leads me to the review of this port. This is a remake of the SNES classic Mega Man X, which I'm a big fan of and recently played on Mega Man X collection. I have to say this has to be one of the best remakes I've played in a while. One of the first things you notice about MMMHX (whew) is the new 3D graphics that work very well on a 2D platform. This is something Capcom pulled off on Viewtiful Joe and Mega Man X 8. I think it's a perfect way to spice up 2D gameplay since all these whiny 3D babies out there think 2D is dead. As you can tell I'm a big 2D fan and I think that the platform produced some of the best games in history. Any way, MMMHX also sports some great sound, including some decent voice acting and remixed version of the original's soundtrack. The lighting during the explosions are excellent and the animations are spot on. The enemies seem to have more personality to them this time around, which makes the story a lot deeper. Two of the best parts of this game is after you finish it you get to play as Vile (X's arch enemy) and you unlock a 20 min movie. The movie is done just like the cut scenes, very crisp anime with some computer affects, which makes you wish there was MMX anime out there (hint, hint). I also like the fact that they pretty much kept everything in from the original, including the Hadouken fireball secret! Sweet!
The Bad: Although I did like the fact that Capcom kept everything from the original, I still felt that there could have been more changes. Yes, I know it's a remake and as I first started playing I loved it, which I still do but it just seems like the same old same old. They made changes to the layout of the stages, including the placements of the powerups which annoyed me at first, I got over it after I finally found the dash boots. Don't be deterred by these personal minor gripes, the game is still great!
The Ugly: If the graphics get to close to the screen you can sometimes see how blocky it is.
Final: MMMX is a great addition to the PSP's small library and anyone who enjoyed oldschool gameplay should pick this up. Now all they need is a Castlevania remake like this...
