A great Mega Man RPG.
You'll travel through Mega Man style environments such as giant structures that remind you of factories/military bases,as well as jungle and desert and Giga city which has reploids going about their daily lives and and has futuristic look and high tech inventions such as the Sky Bus.The cel shaded graphics make things look more serious and the environments feel more futuristic and it has quite a nice affect.
The gameplay has the turn based,JRPG stuff. There's random battles, levelling up,elemental attacks, status effects, and the characters have unique abilities which are inspired from their characteristics. For example,X has his blaster weapon and can do a charged shot,Zero uses blade weapons and you can perform special moves and long combo attacks with them,Axl can now modify his DNA and turn into powerful reploids beasts for one turn, and his Silver Horn(Tsunami wave attack)will be needed to beat a certain boss,Massimo is like the big guy type of reploid who carries a giant hammer and can perform a powerful energy attack,Cinnamon is like the healer(white mage)of the group because she is also the nurse of Giga City and Spider and Marino also make up the rest of the characters.
However, the combat can be a bit one dimensional, because the easiest way to beat some bosses by far is to charge up your attack,go into hyper mode and inflict massive damage.Sometimes you'll need to use X or Axl to shoot down flying enemies or use Axl's tsunami attack to defeat a particular boss to vary things up a bit.
I liked using Zero to do 15 hit combos using special moves from his blade attacks which does 20'000 HP damage. When an enemy is low on health, you can perform a final strike, and your party will perform a big combo, that might be more than 40 hits to finish off an opponent or to weaken a boss that's low on health even more.
However, the random enemy encounter rate is far too high, every 5 steps you take you'll be attacked, sometimes even less than that, and when you're trying to solve a puzzle or find a switch or discover where to go next,it can be very annoying when you're constantly pulled into random battles. Also, the Mega Man style environments can be make some environments feel a bit repetitive, because just like in the Mega Man platform games,in MM X C mission, you'll be forced to travel through some long, indoor environments that look like factories and if you're somebody who plays JRPGs a lot,you might be used to seeing more imaginative surroundings.
Also,the map is useless.
I didn't like the game's music though and it doesn't have the electronic sounding feel of other Mega Man games, and I missed hearing the electronic voice saying READY! at the start of missions that I hear in other MM games. You'll see the WARNING sign and hear an alarm when you're about to fight a boss like on other Mega Man games which I like.
Also,I didn't find the story that interesting,it has plot twists but didn't draw me in as much as other JRPGs have,I guess it's not that big a deal for me because the cameo appearances of the characters and the Mega Man influence for the battle system and presentation made the game charming and fun for me,however the game is also short and can be beaten within 15 hours which is very short for a JRPG,and JRPG purists might not be as forgiving as me towards this game.
Overall,I think the game is fun and charming and the Mega Man influence makes this JRPG fun.
