Konami surprised everyone when they announced their upcoming Metal Gear-title for the PSP not to be a stealth action game, but a turn based strategy game. But that worked out fine for me, since I’m a sucker for turn based games! Turn based strategy meets trading card games, that’s the best way to describe the gameplay in Metal Gear Acid. The stages look great and breathe Metal Gear, but they contain blocks. You can move your character over these blocks by using cards in your deck. These cards represent a certain action that can be taken, like firing a gun, throwing a grenade or using armor, but almost every card can be used for movement. The number in the top right corner of a card represents the COST taken for the action. The higher the cost stack up, the longer you have to wait till it’s your turn again. You can take two actions per turn, but there are cards that can make this three or four. The downside is that you can only take six cards in your hand, which are randomly selected from your deck. That means that it may happen that aren’t any good cards in your hand when you need to. The upside is that this also can happen to one of the enemy’s. When that happens you can discard two cards and trade them for two new ones. The graphics look great. The stages look exactly like the ones in other Metal Gear-games only slightly less detailed. The characters look good too and so do the explosion and fire effects. The sound and music in the game are great too. The SFX sound very realistic and the music makes the game even more exciting. The main key of the game is not to be spotted, but when you do, a faster music starts and you’re immediately on your guard. Although many Metal Gear-fanatics were very disappointed about the new gameplay for Metal Gear Acid, it certainly intrigued me from the start till the very end. It took me about 24 hours to complete normal mode and I’ve enjoyed every second of it! I know I can’t recommend this game to everyone, cause not everyone likes this kind of gameplay. To me this is a great game and it’s worth every penny I spent on it!
