A great title that shows off the power of the PSP.

When Sony announced the development of the PSP, word got out that a Metal Gear game was currently in development for the PSP. Many people wondered how the Metal Gear franchise could make it on the PSP. They soon discovered that this game wouldn't be an action game like the console franchise, but rather it would be a card-based game. This confused people in many ways, but luckily, it really works. Metal Gear Acid takes places a few years after the events of MGS 2 on Moloni Island. After terrorists hijack a plane containing a presidential candidate, they demand to be given Pythagoras, a nuclear-equipped walking tank based at Moloni Island. Solid Snake is sent to stop Pythagoras from going into the wrong hands. But of course veterans of the series know that the story gets more complicated than that, as indeed it does. The card-based strategy in Metal Gear Acid works extremely well. You can use most cards to move around the area, or you can use the cards for their special purposes. For example, you can use a FAMAS card to move around, or you can use it to fire at your enemies. There are body-armor cards, health cards, and weapons cards to be used to your advantage. However, it takes more patience than ever to master this game. Some times you'll be waiting at one spot for an extended period of time waiting for a certain card to show up. Other times you'll be waiting as enemies continually shoot at you. All of these factors can get very frustrating. The in-game tutorials on how to play the game aren't very good. It'll take you a while to learn the whole game, but when you do, you'll have a blast. This game shows how powerful the PSP is in terms of graphics. The environments are very well detailed. The in-game character models, however, are somewhat disappointing. Solid Snake's face looks rather bland with detail lacking. This is due to the tight schedule the development team had in order to have the game out by the PSP launch. There is also no sound in the game. Sure you'll still hear the weapons firing, the footsteps and all that stuff, but there is no character voicing as you are forced to read what they say. This is rather disappointing considering the fact that one of the things that made the Metal Gear franchise so great was the voice acting. However, is you can get past the frustration, have some patience, and maintain an open mind, then you'll find that Metal Gear Acid is a great title that shows off the power of the PSP.
