Interesting, if not different
User Rating: 8.4 | Metal Gear Acid PSP
A lot of eyebrows were raised when Metal Gear AC!D was revealed as a card battle game. Even the hardcore fans, including myself had their reservations. But since I love Metal Gear so much I had to give it a shot. And I'm glad I did. Acid takes the classic MGS gameplay and turns it into a turn based tactical strategy game system governed by playing cards. Tough to describe and I'm not really sure how to compare it to other games since I've never really played card battle games. You're probably better off reading BradS's review to find out about the gameplay. All I can say is that it is different and takes some time to get used to. Once you do however it can be a very satisfying and deep experience. It is very heavy on strategy especially later on in the game. The graphics look like they are straight out of the MGS games on PS1 and PS2 only at a higher resolution. The environments have that same look and feel of MGS2 and Snake looks more like the young, slimmer Snake of MGS1, even though he does have a little mullet. Cutscenes are shown as basically still images with character converstations over them. All the conversations are in text. Nothing spectacular. The menues are slick though and really have a unique eye-catching feel to them. The sound is what you'd expect from a Metal Gear game. Alot of the gun sounds sound the same as the previous games and that famous alert sound that happens when guards spot you returns. The music sounds a little different but still familar kinda like how the game is. Sort of a faster remix of the classic stuff. No Harry-Gregson Williams orchestral stuff here and no voice-overs here unfortunately. This game is radically different from what we are all familar with but don't let that deter you from trying this game out. But I urge you that if you do try it out, play a lot of it. Don't just try it for a few minutes and decide. You really need to spend a few hours to learn the ins and outs of the game to really understand and appreciate this unique game. BTW Kojima is crazy (which is good for us gamers)
