Even though they don't share the same story, Metal Gear Solid on the GameBoy Color is every bit as good as the original.

Everyone knows that the PlayStation to handheld games were crappy back inthe day. Metal Gear Solid was an exception. Metal Gear Solid on the GameBoy (Known to some as Metal Gear: Ghost Babel) did more than just become a victim to this curse. It made itself better and start fresh with a new story.

Gameplay: Gameplay was similar to the PlayStation version of Metal Gear Solid. You can still crawl, lean against a wall, make distracting noises, and all the hardcore stuff Snake can do. The weapons are different, however. Instead of Snake's trusty Mark. 23 "SOCOM", he uses the just as awesome Five Seven pistol. Both can be outfitted with a suppressor to make you a more silent assassin. Instead of the FA-MAS, you have to use the R5 assault rifle, a variant of the Isreali Galil assault rifle. Other weapons are the same, such as the Grenade, Chaff grenade, Stun grenade, C4, and the Nikita missle. Too bad there is no PSG-1 or Stinger missle launcher.

Graphics: Those graphics on the GameBoy Color are pretty good considering the hardware they were on. My only gripe is that they could have been more detailed like the MSX games. Then again, putting more detail in the graphics would be asking too much.

Sound: Sound is equivelent of the Metal Gear games on the MSX. Since it had been a long time since I played any 2D Metal Gear games, I don't remember.

Story: Story is a bit different from the other games. Snake has to infiltrate a South African base in Gindra, and he meets the FOXHOUND substitutes, Black Chamber. Expect many twists, especially when one person on your support team is involved.....

Overall: This game is a good reason to keep your old GameBoy around. It is a good port, and you won't be disappointed. This game is overlooked, even by the most hardcore Metal Gear fans like me.
