User Rating: 9.5 | Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater PS2
At a first glance, Metal Gear Solid 3 is a beautiful, but frustrating game. Fans of the other games in the Metal Gear Solid series will probably be distraught by the jungle setting, the lack of the overhead radar and most of all, the camera angle. While crawling through long grass, you often crawl into the view of a patrolling guard, who if not taken out quickly will call for more guards. Although finding a place to hide is fairly easy, you will be agonised by the long wait until the guards go back to their normal patrols. Advancing though the game is quite easy. You can choose to use the camouflage system which is nicely done, but can get a bit annoying at times, when you're finding yourself continuously having to access the menu to change your camouflage to match your surroundings. Another way is to just blast your way through the sections. There are very few guards in most areas, and once you have killed four or five, the area is empty for you to explore freely. In order for you to survive, you must capture or kill various living things, such as snakes and rats. Snake will eat anything, and depending on the taste, he will recover some of his lost stamina. A nice addition to the game is the cure system. In order for you to heal yourself, you must treat your wounds, mend your broken bones etc, although this does get a bit unrealistic when you find yourself mending a broken arm in the middle of a boss battle. There are lots of weapons, that all work nicely. Enemies react realistically when you shoot them. If you shoot them in the leg, they will stumble, they will die with a shot to the head, or a few shots to the torso. As you advance though the game, you will no doubt be gripped by the amazing storyline. If you don't like the gameplay, you will want to finish the game just for the story. In all my experience of playing games, I have never witnessed a game that gripped me as much as Metal Gear Solid 3 did. It could have been a big hit as a movie. The boss battles are worth mentioning. Although they add a sci-fi theme to what is supposed to be a serious game, they are some of the greatest boss battles ever to make it into a game. Metal Gear Solid 3 as a whole, is worth buying. I can almost guarantee that anyone will like it, whether you're an action game veteran, or completely new to the genre, this game is for you.
