MGS3 goes back in time to where the story all began. It has a very different type of gameplay from the previous games: where the other ones had all taken place in a industrial-type environment, most of MGS3 takes place outside. It adds in the "survival" element, where you actually have to collect food and keep yourself nourished to keep your stamina up as well as your life gauge. The really nice thing about this setup is that as long as your stamina is up, your life will heal. As long as you can run away and find a good hiding place, you're good to go. ... Speaking of hiding, the other great new addition to your list of tools in MGS3 is camouflage. There are a bunch of different outfits and facepaints that you can get in this game which will help you blend in with different surroundings, which I thought was a brilliant addition.
Another great addition to the series was the user-controllable 3rd-person camera (which is only in the Subsistence release).
This game really raised the bar for both the series and games in general. It took it to a whole new level in graphics, gameplay, and cinematic storytelling. This game is pure genius.
