Worthy of the Metal Gear label in every way. Fantastic remake of the original Snake Eater.
User Rating: 9.5 | Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (First Print Limited Edition) PS2
Let me start off by stating that I am a huge Metal Gear Solid fan. Whether that means I am biased is completely up to the reader. With that stated, on to the review. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater tells the story of Big Boss, the father of Solid, Liquid, and Solidus Snake. The story takes place around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis with the specter of the Cold War taking hold of the world. In order to save the world, Snake must rescue the brilliant scientist Dr. Sokolov from the grasp of the nefarious Colonel Volgin. The Boss, Snake's mentor and in my opinion, the star of the game, has defected to the Soviet Union and joined Volgin's forces. Together, they desire to build a Metal Gear and create a new world order. Subsistence is a remake of Snake Eater. It differs in that there is a fully customizable camera that can be panned and tilted manually. This greatly enhances the experience of playing the game, although the "classic" view comes in handy at times too. I never played the original Snake Eater, but what I see from Subsistence, the camera is excellent! As usual, the story and music in the game is of Metal Gear standards. Unlike the convoluted story of the second game, the events that unfold are easy to follow in this game. As I stated before, the story is one of the game's greatest strengths. It really plays on your emotions and seeing the relationship between Snake and The Boss is genuinely moving. The environment in this game is the jungle. You will need to keep your stamina up by hunting for food. Since the game is set in the 60's, your only form of radar is a battery powered active sonar and motion detector. I found this hard to get used to at first, but once I did, I became glad that I couldn't spam my way through the game. The boss fights in this game are simply incredible. They are all so unique and well thought out. You will fight the Cobra Unit which includes: The Pain, The Fear, The Fury, The End, and The Sorrow. You will also fight Ocelot, Colonel Volgin, destroy the Shagohod, and come face to face with The Boss. The graphics in this game are excellent by PS2 standards. The music, as always, is excellent. The addition of CQC, or close quarters combat, to the game's combat engine has added depth of the game and makes it a whole load of fun to play. I seldom bothered pulling out a gun. I just choked people, slammed them to the ground, and slit their throats when I wanted to pick a fight. I could probably go on forever about how great this game is. Of all the Metal Gears, it is a very close second favorite behind the original. The cast of characters is excellent; The Boss, Ocelot, and EVA are particularly memorable in this game. Simply put, BUY THIS GAME! It is a worthy addition to ANY SERIOUS GAME COLLECTION.
