Continues to prove why you just can't keep a good Snake down.
Two years later, fans are getting a second taste of their beloved “MGS3” with the aptly named remake/add-on “Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.”
As is the case with the majority of “Metal Gear” games, the story of “MGS3” revolves around a lone soldier codenamed “Snake” and his mission to rescue missing scientists, all while inevitably discovering what fiendish plans the “terrorist group of the week” have cooked up.
However the major distinction in “MGS3” when compared to the other games in the series is that gamers won’t be playing as the crowd favorite soldier Solid Snake that fights terrorism in the near future, but rather as his ill-fated father Naked Snake as he fights terrorism during the Cold War.
While not giving away too many of the twists and turns of the game, the story is chock full of enough espionage, double-crosses, conspiracies, and action to keep even the most skeptic “Metal Gear Solid 2” hater satisfied until the very end.
But unlike the original 2004 version, “Subsistence” has so much more to see and play after the end credits roll.
The first great addition to “Subsistence” is the inclusion of the two games that started it all. While both “Metal Gear” and “Metal Gear 2” was originally released in Japan on the home computer console the MSX, the first game was the only one ported to the NES and released in America. Despite being extremely dated, the games play incredibly well on the PS2 controller and will inspire some serious nostalgic feelings for any old school gamer.
Other additions to “Subsistence” include various modes to keep gamers playing and unlocking additional surprises. Modes such as “Duel Mode”, “Theatre Mode”, and the oddly appealing “Snake vs. Monkey Mode” are all great fun to mess around with, but they pale in comparison to the one mode that sells this game: online mode.
This is the very first time in its 18 year run that a “Metal Gear” game features online play for multiplayer action, but it was well worth the wait.
Gamers may be a bit skeptical about playing a game like “MGS3” online, but thanks to a brand new player controlled camera it is a very smooth experience. Whether gamers choose to play macho and see how fast they can empty ammo clips into nearby boxes, walls, or possibly competitors or playing it smart with sneaky stealth kills with a knife, every gamer can find something to enjoy with online “Subsistence.”
Just to solidify the interest of gamers, there are various different online game modes to play including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Sneaking Mission, Capture Mission, and Rescue Mission. These game types keep the online aspect of “Subsistence” fresh and fun.
For the price of $30, “Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence” is without a doubt a very smart and inexpensive purchase, especially for the gamers out there who have just crawled out from whatever rock they may have been living under to play the incredible “Metal Gear Solid 3” for the first time.
