A truly proud addition to the astonishing Metal Gear series.
But ofcorse, what makes this game so different to the other metal gears is its time-era; its in the middle of the cold-war (if you havnt guessed yet). And due to this era, ofcorse, you wont be playing Solid Snake, or even Raiden. However, you play the man himself, Big Boss. What I find most interesting is that eventhough your playing Big Boss, you tend to forget throughout gameplay that you are actually playing him, instead of solid snake, due to his identical appeareance, and being voiced by David Hayter.
MGS 3 links up very well with the other series as a prequel, revealing how it all started for Big Boss, and how he claimed the code name. Also a nice little addition of seeing Shalashaska (Revolver Ocelot) as the young leader of the 'Ocelot Unit', and see how he become the sadist, sharpshooting genious that we all best know him for.
Graphics just get better and better throughout the metal gear series, and MGS 3 is at the peak of that (until MGS4). The soundtrack is by the same man who did MGS2 (forgotten his name but hes also worked on films such as 'Armageddon' and 'Shrek').
But this is what I think is the biggest flaw in the game, the main soundtrack just sounds way too 'James Bond-esque'. And this is not 007, its MGS. Just too corny for my likeing.
Additional ways to play the game are also here. My personal faveourite is the camouflage that you can change, unlock and use throughout the game to foil your enemies and prevent being spotted.
However, being set in the mid-1960's, you dont have any of the fancy, hi-tech equiptment that you got from the previous metal-gear games, including your radar system. So you would have to put up with a straight forward radar system that you can only use when you equip it in your item window. However, the battery goes down as you use it, the same goes with the N.V.G (Night vision goggles), Thermal goggles, etc.
So it lives up to the era of the story. However a few secrets are left around the narrative and gameplay which are innuendos of the previous games in the series... incuding the Soviet officer that looks remarkably like Raiden from 'MGS2'. So theres always things to keep your eye on and discover.
Original, provocative, and addictive... essential for all metal-gear fans. Even for those who arent.
