User Rating: 10 | Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater PS2
First of all, I want you to know that MGS3 is arguably the most underrated game of ALL TIME! GS review was very unfair to it, and if you want the real impressions of the game you'd better read reader reviews. Brief: Once you place the DVD in your PS2 and start playing, you'll be TOTALLY immersed in the game's atmosphere. There's been nothing like this game before in terms of innovation and story-telling. A solid candidate for GOTY. Gameplay: the best in the series and tops that of any stealth game out there. Since the gameplay is so convoluted, I'll explain it in sections: *Gameplay mechanics-the most impressive part of the gameplay, vast range of gameplay moves and techniques which are realistically motion-captured and an amazing interactive environment. Your hunt to the food you need is absolutely breathtaking in the sense that it immerses you into the situation. The CURE option is a great touch, too. *Environments-this must be one of the biggest environments seen in a game to date. Surprisingly, the loading time is the same as MGS2 though it loads a much more detailed and massive environment. *AI-the AI is fantastic and much tougher (not only soldiers' but animals' too). Forget about hiding behind walls and shooting guards from the back because you'll be lucky to be in such a situation as the environment imposes you to play hide-and-seek with them. The guards are so annoying when you are discovered and will constantly attack you in groups, beat you with knives, set you traps or even attack you with dogs (all that on normal difficulty). They'll never leave you alone until they hunt you down. Graphics: MGS3 is one of the best looking games of all time, nuff' said. The incredible detail put in the environment is unmatched. The facial detail in specially the main characters will make you crap your pants and sit back wondering how Kijima did it, added to realistic hair movement. The guards are amazingly detailed with visible eyes that blink and interact. The variety in the environment textures and the beauty of the levels won't get you bored (for granted). The water effecfts are some of the best; shoot a bullet and it realistically penetrates through water causing tiny bubbles in its path, throw a bomb and the amazing particle effects will show you the power of the game's engine. The frame rate is pretty solid and does not drop except in situations where there are about 4 guards with a bomb thrown in the middle (and yet the drop isn't that noticable). One thing is the slowdown which occurs (sometimes) during radio calls, but it doesn't influence the gameplay so I'll likely by-pass that. There is much to talk about in graphics, but you better see the game for yourself. Sound: marvellous voice-acting, the jungle sounds put you in a real immersive feel that you might have not felt before--birds and animals sound extremely real and the character voice acting is the best eva! Value: the story alone will take about 20-25 hours let alone the 'Snake vs Monkey' addition which will make for a high play value. Lasting appeal: what can I say? THE GAME IS FRAKING ADDICTIVE!
