A must-have in every PS3 library

User Rating: 9.5 | Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (Platinum) PS3
I really wanted to give this game a perfect score. Unfortunately, there are too many, ahem, "imperfections" to qualify it as a 10/10 perfect. I can't conceive how a game that pays so much attention to detail has such horrible gunfire sound. Guns sound like they were banging on a tin can in the audio booth. The loading times are paced fine and are not as annoying as you think, but sometimes they spoil the climax of the action. Also, the game was developed in 1998, but it's not an excuse to exclude support for trophies, which they can do with an update. The other problems are perks of the Metal Gear Solid series that have never been addressed: The ultra-long cut scenes. The overwrought, ultra-complicated plots. The complexity of controlling Snake, which has become more difficult as he and the bad guys learn to do more tricks. Seriously, the controls on the first MGS were okay, why make it more complicated/less fun? On the good side, this game loses some of the ridiculous micro-managing of camouflage and injuries from Metal Gear Solid 3 that ruined most of the fun of that game.

When you put those things aside, the game is something to be seen. Amazing graphics, spectacular cinematic score, over-the-top scenes, great level design, superb boss fights and some incentives to play it again, such as an online multiplayer system. The game and the story is a nod to Metal Gear Solid fans. Maybe too much, because new players to the series will feel alienated (despite flashbacks and other explanations). Fans of the series will definitively have orgasms over this one. I can't say it's the best title in the series, but it's very close.

This game pushes the PS3 technology to to the max. It's a game you don't want to miss.
