User Rating: 10 | Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection PS2
Metal Gear Solid. What a classic Playstation game. It redefined the tactical espionage genre and pushed every limit, from it's beautiful graphics (they were beautiful back then), excellent storytelling, great boss fights and overall atmosphere became one of the best known games on the PS2, became the standard for all espionage games to come and became the flagship franchise for Sony and their future endeavors. Playing this game again should be enough, but the fact that it also includes Metal Gear Solid 2, one of the best sequels ever, and Metal Gear Solid 3, which contained many bold new steps for the series, it's stupid to not pick it up unless you don't have a Playstation 2 or hate amazing games at amazing prices.

Metal Gear Solid chronicles the journey of Solid Snake as he thwarts terrorist actions and ultimately defeats the giant robotic monstrosities known as Metal Gears. the game plays out in an espionage way that can divert to a more fast-paced action feel at certain intervals, or if you're thirsty for a more action packed experience. Overall, the goal is to get from A to B without being seen, but if you are seen, then you can either blow your way towards your target or hide until the alert goes down. When you do which is crucial, but generally, the rule of thumb is to stay out of sight.

The game can feel somewhat arcade-styled at times, which can feel nostalgic, but it also tells an interesting narrative as well. Every game compels you to finish if not to enjoy the combat, then to find out what happens next. It's that perfect middle ground that story-nuts and action-freaks can agree on.

This plays out the same for almost all of them. The fact that you can get them all for only thirty dollars is amazing. It's definitely a sort of promo for Metal Gear Solid 4, and it works well in this area. Because of this set, I will probably get a PS3 because of how masterfully crafted these games are. Any way you look at it, its a great deal. If you've played them, get it to play them again. If you've never played them, shame on you. Get them immediately. If you're a collector, then all the better. If you own a PS2 and don't have these games, get it. It's half the price of an Xbox 360 or PS3 game, and will give you three times, if not more, the enjoyment. It's a terrific buy.
