A cinematic masterpiece well ahead of its time.

Metal Gear Solid is definitely an incredibly fun game to play - even when it's nine years old. The gameplay is solid, intense, action-packed, and pits you against classic bosses you would never forget (Psycho Mantis will always remain as one of my favorite bosses of all time). But gameplay alone will not compel you to play Metal Gear Solid. In fact, it's not the biggest reason to play it. The real reason why you should play this game is the storyline that rivals novels like the Da Vinci Code and the Harry Potter series in terms of quality, or edge-of-your-seat suspense. Never before have I been so immersed in a game's story and characters. And part of the reason why I was so involved was because there was so much material in the way the plot unfolded as well as the backstories for all of the characters. You want find such content anywhere other than the best written novels. The gameplay is great too. everything you accomplish in the game from knocking out guards to defeating bosses to avoiding detection with a cardboard box is extremely satisfying no matter how many times you pull them off. Speaking of cardboard boxes, this game knows how to tell a joke as well as be serious. This is a game that to this day, has only been surpassed by its successors. No other IP has created such intriguing and captivating stories with a cast of characters you can't help but love.
