Story/Objective: The first game in Hideo Kojima's series that was brought to the U.S. Hidden in the jungles of South America is a military compound called Outer Heaven. Here, the maniacal Colonel CaTaffy and his army have constructed a nuclear doomsday weapon known only as Metal Gear. An agent of the special forces unit Fox Hound, named Gray Fox, has set out to uncover information about this threat but never returned. As new recruit Solid Snake, you must infiltrate the base, find your comrade, and destroy the Metal Gear. Gameplay: When you start out, all you have is a pack of cigarettes, your fists, and a transceiver which you need to keep in contact with your commander, as well as other allies. You need to go through the jungle and several buildings on your mission. Some areas are restricted, so you need to also locate the appropriate key cards. Remember that you're out to infiltrate, and that means using stealth and sneaking your way through the base, either by creeping behind enemies or hiding with a cardboard box. If you are discovered you can defend yourself with your fist or several weapons you find as you progress, such as pistols, grenades, machine guns, and so on. Other items can be found to aid your mission. Enemy troops are everywhere, including several bosses that guard key locations. You also need to watch out for death traps, which lie just about everywhere. During the mission you'll find POWs, and if you rescue them your rank will increase, as will your life and your ability to carry items. One person you need to find is Dr. Pettrovich. He was forced to build Metal Gear and only he knows how to stop it. Be careful who you trust on you mission, though; not everyone's on your side. Final Thoughts: Metal Gear never got the attention it deserved, and that's a shame because this is an excellent, innovative quest game. The graphics are very good with color and detail that helps the atmosphere, though it is a little on the grungy side. The music sets the mood; however you only hear two of the tracks through most of the game. The game wrold is very large, and you practically need to search everywhere to find the items you need. Hands down a game with suspense, action, and fun to boot. You won't believe how the storyline plays out, with a few big twists near the end. Plus the fact that you should use stealth adds to the excitement. You should definetly sign up for this mission.
