This is an old Neo Geo re-release and it shows

User Rating: 6.5 | Metal Slug 3 PS2
I'm a massive Metal Slug fan, don't get me wrong, but I know when a game is good or bad. With Metal Slug 3 on PS2, the series had basically already done all that was possible to keep the series fresh - new weapons, music, bosses, you name it.

However, despite how much SNK try to coat the game with new paint, the errors of Metal Slug will still remain. Despite this though, we still have an enjoyable game, worthy of a few dollars. So for starters, the ageing 2D graphics aren't doing the game any favours. There is nothing wrong with Metal Slugs cartoon visual style itself, but the resolution is very poor. Because of this, we get a jagged look on the visuals, which ain't cool at all.

In fact with that being said, if the screen is going to be darted with numerous objects, how on earth will you be able to spot yourself in the crowd? But be thankful that unlike previous Metal Slug games on Psone, SNK have done well to provide a decent port of the game. There is very little difference between the arcade and PS2 version of this game, in a very good way, including fast load times.

With that in mind though, like mentioned earlier concerning the graphics, improvements to the game itself could've been welcome, especially since the PS2 is far more powerful than a NeoGeo. The sound is a key example of this. Music on Metal Slug 3 is fine for the most part, but some tracks in the game have been reused rather than recreated. Also they are at a low quality, similar to the graphics.

Just general sound effects could of benefited from having an upgrade in sound quality, which is a shame. Perhaps the only positive thing to say about this is that it brings the nostalgia alot easier, but this is short term. Now moving on, the game itself plays like Contra. The only difference is that this game is easier, thanks to it's vast array of vehicles and honest life system.

So like Contra, you can die in one hit and improve your weapons with the standard rocket launcher, machine gun, etc. However the vehicles make this a whole lot easier and range from the Metal Slug itself (a tank) to Camel's rigged with machine guns. It's clear the gameplay is the major selling point to Metal Slug 3. All of the missions have heart pounding action. They scream fun and demand skill as you react each mini-second to every gunshot and explosion.

So going back to the point, why does this game rate so low? It's just too short. Very little in Metal Slug 3 asks you to come back for more and more. There are extras, but barely worth noticing. Also, unlike the legendary Contra, the game lacks real replay value, unless with a friend. Some moments of the game are notoriously difficult, leading to moments of serious frustration.

Although even then as I write this revision of my old review, you're probably better off buying the Metal Slug Anthology.
In many areas this game excels in intense action and hard earned skill, but this is an old Neo Geo re-release and it shows.
