So, you're missing the old 2d shooters like Contra, or even Metal Slug itself? Did you like crazy slugfest like Serious Sam when it came out? Do you like goofy, almost cartoon like action? And you're looking for a good challenge? Then maybe Metal Slug 3 is for you! Of course, 2D shooters aren't immersive games like your brand new Halo2, Doom3 or Half-Life 2, not in the same way anyways. MS3 is a game that gives you a real challenge, where you have to put all your efforts in your reflexes, ask you to get back the finesse and the skills you had for such games years ago and make them even better. You have the choice of 4 Characters, Marco, Tarma, Eri and Fio (Tarma's my favorite), and you're put against the forces of the evil General Morden. You'll fight giant animals, soldiers, fishes, zombies vehicles and then some. You'll have to rescue prisoners on your way and you'll get access to tons of weapons. It's the good ol' shoot, jump, dodge, crouch and continue shooting all the while kind of game. You won't be able to take your eyes of the screen, that I promise you! You'll have access to vehicles yourself, called Metal Slug (now you know where the name's from) to help you in the heated battle. Don't get any false idea; this game IS hard, even the normal setting ain't a joyride (at first at least). That's one game you'll be really proud to finish. The boss fights are "à la Serious Sam" (if you don't know the old Metal Slug games to compare that is), but in 2D of course. You'll also be able to get some temporary allies and collect all kinds of score goodies. The graphics are pretty good for what they are, the background and the whole environment is nice, full of colors and detailed. The enemies are pretty well drawn and believe me you'll have diversity here! For those complaining that games like Doom3 and the like are too dark you won't be having this problem here. There are quite a few special effects, like the vehicles explosions and when you get fat (yup, now that's a lesson for those of you who pass way too much time in front of that TV!) The sound is done o.k. but maybe it's because it is a 2D side-scroller there isn't a classical theme that will stay in your heads for hours and hours, There are different theme and they're all equally good, and they change when you have a boss fight. The guns sounds could have been more satisfying but it makes sense with the old school 2D side-scroller thing. Your characters don't make much sound and neither do the enemies. Among other things you get to play the game in cooperative, which can be really fun if you have someone who can play decently. The gaming modesare "Arcade" which is the main mode where you go through all 5 levels. You can select each mission once you've unlocked it to begin the game at the beginning of that mission. You have also “torming the UFO Mother shi”, which is a bonus stage with a different character and some different gameplay attributes. You can also put your score through Xbox Live for the bragging rights. For those loving the genre it will be a must-have I suppose. And to all the kids needing the bragging rights to the "Hardcore Gamer" tag, if you complete this game on "Very Hard" I'll be more than happy to give it to you. It's not for everyone, but there is no doubt that it can be enjoyed for hours on end.
