The Dark Ones have breached the Metro and you are the only hope.
You play as Artyom a survivor of the nuclear blast that befell Russia in 2013. Artyom was born on the surface but was brought underground to the Metro with the other survivors because of high level radiation.
As the humans continue what's left of their civilization underground, the earth has become overrun with mutant monstrosities. However there is a new threat which is affecting the humans and Artyom seems to be immune to its attacks. It is up to him to find a way to stop the threat before humanity is lost.
Gameplay: It is pretty straightforward. There are no level ups and items can either be bought or found. Gasmask must be used when traveling on surface so gather plenty of filters. You will know when your filter is running out because your mask will become very cloudy and it will be hard to see, or you can always check your watch which will show you the remaining time.
The compass is on your clipboard which you can access by pressing the start button if you are unsure where to go. This also brings up your lighter.
Equipment: Gas Mask, Gas Mask filters, Various Guns, Night Vision Goggles, Med Kits, Pipe Bombs, Lighter, Charger, flashlight and Compass.
The charger is used for the Flashlight to give it a temporary boost of extra power.
Currency: High grade military ammo. Can be traded in for better weapons and armor or can be used to kill enemies faster.
Controls: I had no problem with the controls, however it was sometimes frustrating when shooting at enemies. The mutants move quickly so before you know it they could be behind you, so your constantly moving around and shooting. You will know when you have been attacked because your screen will become bloody.
Story: I understand the premise of the story, however I wish there was more background information. Maybe this was done purposefully for a part 2.
Graphics/Atmosphere: Are well done. Atmosphere is grim which ads to the overall feel of desolation and isolation.
Characters: There are other NPC you encounter on your way through the Metro, however some of the character designs look very similar. I was also dissapointed to see a lack of female characters. There were some kids running around, lots of men but only about 2 women in each station.
I forgot to mention that in addition to mutant enemies there are also human enemies scattered through the metro.
Overall a solid and interesting game with a great atmosphere and intriguing story.
