I like it, lots.. but I just can't love it.
So here we go.....
The best and most enjoyable part of Metro last light is (and was probably always intended to be) the atmosphere.
Dark corridors, the sometimes dubious Russian accents, the chattering in the background when you enter a new 'town.' I often swore I could smell the food cooking in the mini markets and found myself tutting at the creepy guy staring into the gap in the local brothel's curtains. Some nice touches to be sure.
Then there's creeping terror that there will be some creature lurking round the next corner. And the desire to preserve your ammo so the next encounter won't be so tough.
All of this is really good and done really well.
The story is reasonably well told too, whilst a it can be a little predictable at times.
Graphically it won't set the world on fire but its stands up well amongst most first person shooters.
I think what I wanted was more game and less book. I understand it is based on a novel, I get that, but I wonder if a Fallout 3 approach to gameplay and a little more 'free roaming' might have enhanced the game. Personally, I think it would.
I wanted to explore the world but was left following a predetermined 'call of duty-esque' path.
And that's what it is I suppose.. Call of duty with monsters and tunnels.. and even more Russians (if that's possible.) But without the multiplayer.
I'm left enjoying the game but wishing it was even more.
Worth the money? Hmmm maybe, it was a poor month for games releases. It will definitely be worth it when it drops to £25-£30.
Thanks for reading.
