Good game but it's an acquired taste, this is not an action oriented game, its an exploration/puzzle game, mild action.

One of the best games in a long time, but… (there’s always a but, but we’ll get to that later). They nailed the feel of the previous Metroid style pretty spot on. The only problem is that scanning things gets tedious and is pretty boring after the novelty wears off, and the game is nausea inducing. You can get motion sickness from this game even if you are not normally susceptible. It seems like three games so far in Nintendo's all star line up has a problem with inducing eyestrain and motion sickness, Metroid prime, Mario sunshine, and Starfox Adventures, and I've played tonnes of first person games on the PC and Consoles over the years, and no game has induced motion sickness in me at all. But this game does it to me predictably if I play too long or at the wrong times, I will feel motion sickness or eyestrain within the first 30 minutes or hour. Now onto the game, there isn't a lot of story here, its more of classic platformer brought into 3D. But this game is NOT a first person shooter, it’s not designed to bring you lots of tension and pressure from enemy encounters or creatures on the planet. You have a “Z target” (Autolock) feature that makes aiming a snap, so right away you can tell that metroid is not skill based game when it come to aiming at your enemies. The weapons are typical really, they are all classic metroid weapons, pretty much. There’s your missles, super missles, standard beam, the wave beam, the ice cannon that has an awesome ice effect and the lava beam which makes enemy space pirates catch on fire, and man it looks good! Everything in the previous Super Metroid is back, minus the screw attack and a few other minor things. The only problem people might have with this game is that there’s not a lot to do outside exploring the world, scanning the enemies and the more moderate pacing of the encounters with enemies (read: Slower fights, less enemies, less pressure). The best moments in metroid come from the the level bosses, exploring the world and unlocking new areas, items and power ups. The game in between isn’t AS exciting, as you trek back and forth and backtrack over the same levels after you open up some door on the other side of the map or some other area after you just found an item that unlocks it. But all in all, the game alone is worth it for the boss fights and opening sequence alone. This game has one of the BEST opening gameplay sequences in a game (the space station) in a long, long time! But after you leave the space station, the excitement and intensity slows down to crawl though until you start growing in power and encountering the unique enemy bosses. Metroid prime series of games is an acquired taste, the action in between bosses is what leaves a lot to be desired, its an easy game with the auto-aim, and anyone that plays games similar to Halo will just stomp through Metroids primes regular enemies, the bosses are the real challenges and this is why Metroid drags in places because there’s not enough action going on while you’re going through the regular levels. Metroid prime 2 echoes was just released, so look out for my review of that one as well. Over-all if you don’t mind a slower paced game metroid prime might be for you. If you’re looking for intense firefights during regular gameplay between bosses, you probably want to skip metroid prime or just rent it.
