I have to admit, I don’t really get the overwhelming appeal of this game. I bought it a couple of years after it came out for twenty bucks, based primarily on all the high scores it got. And frankly, this is one of the very rare instances where I completely disagree with a GameSpot reviewer. (I mean a 9.7? Come on guys. Was it really THAT good?) On the plus side of things, the game looks nice (if you don’t take issue with other aspects of the game, you could lose yourself in all the exploration the world provides). It controls rather well and there is some fun to be had. But all in all, the pluses didn’t override the minuses for me. For one thing, this game is really just a first person shooter. And whereas in a good FPS much of the enjoyment comes from the variety of weapons you’ll find, in this game the weapons all seem the same but with different colors. There’s no questioning the difference between a pistol and a rocket launcher, but in this game you’ll go from a gun that shoots blue squiggles to a gun that shoots pink squiggles (don’t quote me on the color schematics here, I’m going on memory). And yes, the different guns have different abilities, but so what? Now I can open a pink door instead of a blue door. The differences end up being cosmetic more than anything else. Also, I found the game to be needlessly difficult. If it were a game that could have engaged me, I would have easily forgiven this problem. But in all honesty, why would I want to replay a boss fight over and over again in an attempt to master the game when I don’t care all that much about it to begin with? The story was a problem for me as well. Not that it was particularly bad or anything, it’s just having to unravel it through reading many, many little snippets of logbooks and such got to be tedious. All in all, this game was never able to deliver a compelling reason for me to play it to its conclusion. And I’m sure had I been a serious fan of the original (I played one of the NES games and thought it was okay), I would have liked the game a lot more. Just beware of the hype. This might be a game you’ll like, but then again it might not.
