Mike Tyson's Punch-out, superb, but not that realistic.
Intro:
Mike Tyson’s Punch-out was known as one of the best boxing games on the NES back in 1987. At the time it was not a popular feature to have boxing games with real boxers and this game had Mike Tyson, the World Champion.
Basic plot:
This game is basic side boxing game. You play as 17 year old ‘Little’ Mac from Bronx, New York. Who dreams of becoming World Champion, and he goes against opponents who are a lot bigger than him. And they have ability that you’ve got to realise and if you are able to dodge them like Piston Honda has a combo which is difficult to block, you will have a chance to get an easier to hit and knock an opponent to the floor. The games difficulty goes up in three circuits, Minor, Major and World. And you go up in 4 ranks, last being the champion. You fight opponent after opponent until you get to the World Circuit champion, Mike Tyson. It has been said and proved that he is one of the best boss ever because you only are able to last about 4 seconds before you knocked out and the match is over. It was rare to beat the game as him. You have in your Doc, your coach, who doesn’t help you much and he could be better giving out useful in-game hints not hints for real life boxing because a boxing game isn’t that much real-life.
Gameplay:
The controls are simple, 4 punches, two dodges and a block. All the controls use the directional controls, the A and B buttons. Sometimes it’s hard to know which offences or defences move to use during your opponents move or your chance to attack. And the annoying thing is that if you and your opponent both attack at the same time, only one will react, not like recent boxing games Fight Night 2006, with both reacting to punches hit at the same time, it makes the game more realistic. Finally, the games basic Idea to win is to go in turns to attack for example, you wait for your opponent to hit, you dodge, then hit your opponent four of five times and do it continuously to get your opponent on the floor. It makes the game boring because it’s nearly the only way to win, dodge and counter.
Graphics:
The graphics are the 2-D 8-bit style, with no shading, but the animations and the backgrounds looks a-ok, the animations run smoothly and the game doesn’t skip like some games. And the backgrounds look realistic, from the Statue of Liberty in one of the start screens where Little Mac does some Jogging in Bronx.
Sound:
The music is good and the sound effects are basically Ok
Overall: The game is superb but not that realistic.
