MEoJ01 is a decent sci-fi exploration and puzzle-solving game with enough of a story to keep you moving forward.

Minds Eye of Jupiter 01 is the first episode in a series by rogerst, available on XBL for 240 MS points. With the second episode (02) already released, we can thankfully say that this isn't simply a one-and-out showing.

Minds Eye is a sci-fi mystery adventure game. With a total lack of combat (something I like to see once in a while in regards to a pure vision), Minds Eye takes place in a 3D environment where you start out (female protagonist) exploring some ancient Roman ruins sometime in the future (you have a car that runs on water!). After roaming around the area, exploring around old columns and the like, you'll eventually find your way into a secret underground area that will suddenly veer from the historical to the fictive, where when you first enter the strange realm, your character will ask herself "Do you think the romans built this too?" The answer to such a question is, of course, part of the story, and will be a key feature moving you forward.

In terms of puzzle solving, Minds Eye of Jupiter 01 presents some interesting challenges. Though not every puzzle will be easy to solve, in some cases because you haven't explored enough, in others because one object won't "unlock" until you've interacted with another object, generally speaking the puzzles all make sense. There is a certain feeling of satisfaction here in progressing, which is key to keeping you playing, however some of the difficulty comes from needing to find small objects in a large space, which can feel annoying if you're not up to inch by inch combing. Thankfully, rogerst has posted a walkthrough on his gamespace website, you if you do get stuck you can always check that out to keep you moving forward.

Generally speaking, however, it's the overall mystery and narrative being woven that will keep you moving forward, rather than the puzzles which mostly serve as obstacles to be overcome rather than the thing keeping you playing. The story that unfolds is mysterious enough to peek your interest and the landscapes you encounter are strange enough to push you to solve that next puzzle to find out what's going on. While you'll likely wish that the narrative pace was a tad quicker, ultimately the sense of uncovering arcane secrets and seeing what there is to see will generate enough momentum, thanks in large part to the environments which, while not spectacular, are interesting enough to warrant exploring them.

While the first episode will answer enough questions to feel some sense of accomplishment, it will also broach many more than it answers, which of course are addressed in episode 02.

Minds Eye of Jupiter 01 is a decent game of sci-fi exploration and puzzle solving, so if you're into those aspects consider giving it a look. While it's not amazing, it's a solid production from a creator who's clearly invested in seeing the series through, which is great to see for sure.
