989 might finally be at home on the PSP

User Rating: 8.6 | MLB PSP
Perhaps no other game publisher takes a beating and keeps on bleeding like 989 Sports. For years, the likes of EA Sports (and more recently ESPN Video Games) have simply taken the Sony subsidiary to the woodshed, outclassing every title that 989 has to offer. Unless you were some kind of weird non-conformist, you didn't even consider NFL Gameday or NBA Shootout, much less buy them, because you could have Madden or NBA Live. Critical mass has also been stacked against the former titles and in favor of the latter. Lately, though, 989 has let it be known that they're not going to stop trying to improve their franchises. Actually, they've shown that they're going to try, period. The effort is evidenced by the very polished and enjoyable MLB for the PSP. The first baseball game for the handheld, it's one of the most well-designed and feature-packed sports games you could have the good fortune of carrying around, even if some details were sloughed from the PS2 version. Aesthetically, the game is a wonder. The stadiums are richly drawn and the player animations are superb. Matt Vasgersian and Dave Campbell provide some of the most seamless commentary you'll find on any gaming platform. And all the menus and stat pages are cleanly designed and easy to navigate. It's obvious that 989 has the right idea in this area. Just as impressive, though, is the depth and accuracy of the game. MLB has a variable season mode and a still-unproven infrastructure online mode, and the nature of the games is reflective of actual competition. You'll have pitcher's duels and slugfests alike, errors will happen with reasonable frequency, and nuances like hit batsment, wild pitches, and passed balls are all present. It's one of the more realistic games on the market, simply put. And it's a good way to show off your fancy new PSP to your friends. MLB is a good mix of flash and substance and as a result, it's one of the more compelling titles you can find for the fledgling handheld.
