A great game that took me by surprise. Definitely the best of what monkey island series has to offer.

It's rare for me to like a game that if I play it too long after its release, mostly duo to games not being able to pass the test of time. I've played and finished MI2 in the year 2000, a mere 8 years after its release, and let me tell you: this game scores bigtime in passing the test of time. It took by surprise how a game that has no speech and a 320x200 graphics can get me so invested and excited, without feeling like i'm playing an old game.

The plot is mostly constructed on little, yet great moments that stick with you. You can't play the game without memorable scenes such as the skeleton dance, the explosion in Le'chuck's fortress, and of course, the vague ending.

As far as graphics go, this game has very well drown background scenery, designed in a way that's unique to the series. Sprites are also good, there aren't any shortcuts taken with them. Again, this game is another example that if effort is put into making the game, it pays off immensely.

This game is the first from LucasArts to feature the IMuse sound system, and it shines in this game probably more than it did and ever will in later releases from the company. The themes and the BGM mixes perfectly with the action on the screen, so much so, that sometimes i would just stand in place and go to different locations, just to hear the great transitions between the tunes.

As far as gameplay and difficulty, I have to say this game kinda bugged me. If there's a thing I dislike about certain adventure games is too many locations, and this game definitely has that problem, However, if you pay close attention to what is being said by the characters, you should know exactly what to do every step of the way, and that saves the game from being completly frustrating. Another thing that can be annoying is the inexplicable keeping of used items in the inventory: Why do I need to keep the half-grog bottle after i've used it? Guybrush could've easily claim the bottle was empty and throw it away after you use it. same goes for the used matches, the fishing pole, Largo's voodoo doll and pretty much 90% of the entire inventory. It seems like keeping unusable inventory items was another way to increase the difficulty.

Overall, this game is the best of the series, it reaches a peak in terms of originality in the story and has a great character development. It's hard to be a sequel to a successful game, but this game manages not only to live up to expectations, but to shatter them completly.
