A Mortal Kombat adventure through the eyes of a couple of very cool Shaolin Monks!
In Mortal Kombat Deception, there was an inclusion of a mode called ‘Konquest’, which was somewhat of a partial adventure game. Gathering ideas from here, I feel, the MK team felt that they knew how to create an adventure game – a proper adventure game. With trial and error comes improvement, and working off the mistakes the made with the earlier 2 adventure games, the MK felt they were ready for an MK spin –off!
Enter Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks – an adventure starring 2 of its more popular characters, Liu Kang and Kung Lao. The game can be played either as a single or with 2 players, with a timeline set during the periods of MK2.
The awesome opening depicts what transpired at the ending of MK1, and our 2 monks are left stranded on the island in which the first tournament (MK1) was held, and must now escape it before it is totally destroyed.
Arguably the best Mortal Kombat ever, the MK2 setting will appeal to fans alike with characters from MK2, as well as updated backgrounds (levels) from MK2. Every arena from the MK2 game is in there, albeit expanded to accommodate the 3D gameplay.
Whomever you choose to play the game with, you’ll start out with basic moves. As you progress, you’ll earn more powerful new moves, obtain new methods to finish off single opponents and multiple opponents. Each area in the game also boasts to hide a secret, which unlocks movies and art renders which can be view from a gallery that is accessed on the main menu. On top of that, you can also unlock arenas and fighters specifically for a two player versus mode. On top of that, the game also includes an arcade perfect version of MK2, which can be unlocked by performing certain things when you play the game.
Although you could play the game either with one player or two players, unfortunately the storyline was designed for 2 player mode. For in 1 player mode, you’ll be walloping your way through a plethora of enemies, but come to a cutscene, and your partner mysteriously appears! This is probably the only downside in the game. The dialogue in the cutscenes aren’t perfect, but they’re believable.
This is a must have for all Mortal Kombat fans as the nostalgia from MK2 is definitely there. Even non fans would be pleasantly surprised.
