Once you get used to the new swing mechanic, you'll really enjoy this game.

When 2KGames snagged exclusive third party MLB game rights, I figured the MVP series would go by the wayside. It was a bit disappointing as the game was really beginning to come into it's own. Enter NCAA baseball. No develloper had ever done a college baseball game before, and why not? It seemed like a no brainer.

EA has really done well with this game. Not only is it a fun game to play, but the animations really make it come to life. The new swing mechanics really add a lot to the game, and they're fun and easy to use, unlike the overly aggravating QB Vision from the Madden series.

They take a little bit of getting used to, but I like the new controls, as it makes it easy to decide whether to power hit, pult metal on the ball, pull it, or go to opposite field. The added sense of timing is really entertaining, too, as it makes you concentrate on offspeed pitches more.

College rules the school here, as aluminum bats and 10 run rules are all part of the game. From small schools with tiny fields, to bigger universities with stadiums, this game feels like a college baseball game.

The graphics are decent, but they look rough at times, and you can see some "jaggies." This is more than made up for by the stellar animations. Wait until you see one of your players hit one off his foot. You'll be hoping he's OK while he hops around in pain.

Dynasty mode is present and is pretty solid top to bottom. I like the features of this mode, which include player suspensions and in season recruiting. The ability to create your own school and stadiums allow you to drop in your favorite university even if they aren't in the game. As an added bonus, the announcers are likely even call out the name of your school, especially if it is division 1A. My main problem with franchise mode is that it seems very difficult to build up a subpar program. Recruits never seem to want to come to my school, even if I am winning. I've been through three seasons, playing and simming, and have not had much success recruiting.

The audio is realistic, with the signature PING of the bat when a ball is hit. The commentators do a good job, but there is nothing revolutionary here. The tend to stop in the middle of a sentece if you press a button at a bad time, and they often don't have anything to say at all. Stadium music is serviceable, and if you don't care for it, you can add your own via the XBox hard drive.

All in all, this is definitely a baseball game that will hold you over until the big league games are out this spring. At only $30, it's a double, a steal, and a squeeze for the win!
