Not Bad For A GBA Game, But Could've Been A Bit Better
User Rating: 7 | Need for Speed Underground GBA
NFS Underground on the gameboy advance is addicting and fun on the GBA. The levels of customization are limitless, especially going all out with the vinyls, the bumpers, the works! This is the first NFS title to incorporate upgrades to cars, and what a thrill it is to customize! On quick race, there's such events as quick races, sprints, drags, etc. When you go underground, you'll find yourself challenging other street racers as you strive to the top of the challenge list along with earning some money along the way to purchase and unlock uprgades and certain cars. When you start the game, you'll be limited to 2 cars: the ford focus or the subaru impreza 2.5. As mentioned beforehand, more cars can be unlocked through underground mode. The visuals and graphics to Underground here are blocky and the textures make it hard to see how much pavement is ahead and determining traffic from a distance, but the car designs aren't affected. At times, you'll think you're travelling along the pavement and a wall will pop up out of nowhere and you'd have to act fast to turn in the right direction in time. When you hit a traffic car, depending on how hard the collision was, you'll spin slightly sometimes and the AI will sometimes get involved with the collisions. Early in the game, regaining 1st place after you mess up is stupidly easy as you will catch your opponent(s) only a few yards or so ahead. The audio could've used a little tweaking up as well. The screech sounds and engine noises sound pretty much the same and prolonged screeches from excessive drifting will make your ears bleed. The soundtrack is pretty decent as well as you'll hear songs such as the infamous "Get Low" playing in a consecutive loop throughout the menus and during the races. Overall, the GBA port of FS Underground is a pretty decent racer, although it could use some minor improvements. Worth checking out.
