Considering it is a free to play MMORPG, it really isn't too bad.
When I first started, I was having some trouble getting the game to open. Sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't. I think it was merely some initial bugs, because the game barely came out. When I finally successfully got in, I was greeted by what looked like a pretty and slightly complicated MMORPG. After sitting down with it a little I realized it wasn't really that complicated, but the interface makes it seem like that. I made an elf in the magic faction. My first complaint arises here. Though the limited classes and aesthetic attribute limitations are a little annoying, I could deal with that (and the classes could evolve into different ones anyway so that was fine). What I DIDN'T like, was that the magic wielding elves, (I always play magic users in RPGs), are only female. That's right, most of the races are gender specific. So it kind of defeats the idea of immersion when I can't play how I want on a character that is my own gender. It may seem like a minor gripe, but I like to play an RPG imagining I am myself in a fantastical role. Still, I dealt with it and jumped in.
The controls were easy to learn and the game doesn't throw a ton of spells at you at once, which is nice. You get eased in and don't have to worry about learning a lot. That's actually very important and I was glad of the outcome. The levelling is appropriately paced as well, and the damage pops up in large numbers so you know what is going on.
You get a little pet that gets to follow you around that is initially useless, but can learn abilities to aid you a bit more than just 'hey let's warp back to town!'. Speaking of the town, there is another problem I had with this game, which is communication. One of the most important things in an MMORPG is communication with other players. There is no city chat (like in WoW) and no yell. The only equivalent is a Realm chat but you can only do that if you purchase a megaphone and pay to use it (not money, but this steam stuff in-game). That was a horrnedous idea, especially since you can only use it at a certain level.
Speaking of levels, I got to about level 20 and at that point the story was still not very interesting, which was a bummer. The combat was still enjoyable though which is a plus, and luckily the questing system is absolutely fantastic. You can look on the map to tell you where you need to go to accomplish quest goals. That is very nice and much appreciated.
The music and sound is also decent in the game, but the music tends to just STOP for some reason, before it decides to start up again. Not a major issue since I'm sure most MMORPG players turn off in-game music after a while and put on their own (that's what I do...I like to hear each track a few times then I put my own stuff on), but it is still a little frustrating.
All-in-all though, the game is definitely a positive first step for Atlus. It looks pretty good, the levelling and combat system are nice, the community thus far is nice, and most importantly the game is generally fun. Be warned though that though last time I tried playing it seemed the bugs and glitches about launching the game were ironed out finally, that it being new means there could still be a few sticking around.
Oh and on a final note, though it is free they do have a pay to play service that gives you exp and other bonuses on top of better customer service and stuff...and they have items (mostly aesthetic, which is actually really good because that means people with more money won't get the better gear) you can buy with real money as well if you please. Enjoy.
