I remember my first Mario game. I was about 3 years old when I first played Super Mario World, even until today this remains one of the greatest gaming masterpieces ever. New Super Mario Bros. Wii returns to its 2D roots of classic gaming to create a new and exciting game that any gamer 9 to 90 can enjoy.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii's greatest aspect is its great level design. Each of these platforming levels takes you through a series of challenges to reach the end, along the way you'll meet up with goombas, koopas, and even killer penguins. Each level also includes 3 giant coins. These coins can do two things, first, they allow you to unlock tip videos at Peach's castle in world one and second, if you collect them all, you can unlock world 9. Collecting these coins also adds a great deal of replay value to the game. The levels also include various different items, some such as the mushroom and fire flower you'll recognize, others, like the propeller hat and penguin suit are completely new. The Penguin suit allows you to slide along icy surfaces as well as swim with greater efficiency, it is rather difficult to use and doesn't add to much to the game (however, seeing Luigi wearing this suit never gets old.) The propeller hat on the other hand is a great addition and can be used by shaking the wii remote, aside from one or two other uses this is the only time you will utilize the wii motion controls but don't feel bad because it feels really good to shake the remote and send your character flying.
It would be a lie to say this was an easy game because it is not. This is one of the hardest Mario games I have ever played and you will find yourself dieing quite often. This difficult level skyrockets in multiplayer mode, however. The main aspect of this game is to play through story mode with three other people, and those this is hectic and extremely fun, on many occasions you will find yourself dead at the hands of another player and, what's with being able to play as two different toads, neither of which is red toad? Don't worry though, world one is at least pretty easy...
One major complaint I do have about this game is the distinct lack of yoshi. In only about five levels you will be allowed to play with yoshi and they are some of the most fun levels in the game. So just know, there is yoshi, just not a lot of yoshi. Also, in single player mode, you will be allowed to replay levels and save a toad in that level. You get an item by doing this but it is so repetitive you'll quickly grow tired of saving this unfortunate toad.
Besides that there isn't much left to say, the world map works pretty well and it is as easy turning on a light switch to swap between areas and overall there is a lot to get from this package. This is an amazing game and you will want to add it to your collection, don't waste 10 bucks renting it, go to the store and just buy it.
